Visiting author Marc Tyler Nobleman to arrive on Guam!

Marc Tyler Nobleman is the author of more 70 books for children and one for adults. His picture book Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman received multiple starred reviews, appeared on several "best of the year" lists, and made the front page of USA Today. It's the first standalone biography in any format of writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster and the first picture book on the story behind a fictional character, let alone the world's first superhero. He has written extensively for Nickelodeon; his other credits include DC Comics, PBS, History Channel, and National Geographic Kids. He is also a cartoonist whose work has appeared in more than 100 magazines, seven of which you’ve heard of including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Good Housekeeping.

I am writing as a courtesy, to inform you that our author, Kathryn Erskine’s flight has been delayed due to inclement weather in Virginia. Kathryn’s flight is scheduled to arrive at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday therefore, she will be unable to present at the general membership meeting. I have attached her schedule for the week and you are more than welcome to meet and greet her and attend one of her SASSy presentations on the schedule. Please remember that if you attend a presentation at a school site, it is required that ALL VISITORS sign in at the main office.

National Book Award Winner Erskine will be January Keynote Speaker

Kathryn Erskine, 2010 National Book Award winning author of Mockingbird, will be the speaker at the January meeting of the Guam Council of the International Reading Association at the Sheraton Laguna Resort on January 15, 2011, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am.

She will be traveling from Charlottesville, Virginia to share her "SASSy" writing tips, how to "Snag your reader, Act your character, Show your story, and Shake your world". School visits are Tuesday, January 18 to Friday, January, 21. A teacher workshop and a teen writing workshop are also scheduled. Call Cyndy at 789-1996 for more information.

Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera, IRA Webmaster, represented the Guam IRA and ESL Program at the 29th Annual International PIBBA Conference June 22-25, 2010 in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Dr. Rivera and fellow ESL Coordinator, Kos Reuney, presented the following workshops:

* Going Green with IRA to Impact Culture in the Pacific
Learn how the Guam International Reading Association engaged in a “Going Green” campaign to reach out to its members in a more environmentally friendly manner. In doing this, IRA moved forward in “Going Digital!” This saved postage, energy, and natural resources. Ultimately, this impacts culture in the Pacific, as are able to conserve trees, water, and the natural environment that are important to our culture. It is important that we preserve what we can, because a culture without its natural resources will eventually die out.

*Using Digital Storytelling to Save Our Language and Culture
Digital storytelling offers a powerful medium to convey stories. Learn how you can use digital storytelling to build schema, increase reading comprehension, and most of all, save our language and culture.

*Using Coconut Weaving in Guam Classrooms to Improve the Language Arts and Mathematics Skills of Local Students
Guam has a rich heritage and tradition in folk arts, such as the art of coconut-leaf and pandanus-leaf weaving. For thousands of years Chamorros have used abundant foliage to produce useful and unique items. Although the artistry of weaving is not used abundantly like before, attempts to revive the art is currently being done by the Gef Pago Cultural Center and other local artists. Explore examples of integrating language arts and mathematics skills in the art of weaving from Guam, including utilitarian items, such as hats, headbands, fans, mats, bracelets, and baskets, as well as decorative items, such as roses, grasshoppers, whips, and fish.

The 29th Annual International Pacific Islands Bilingual Bicultural Association (PIBBA) Conference was filled with cultural excitement that has left a lasting impression for all participants from across the Pacific region! The conference theme, “Reviving the Languages and Cultures of the Pacific – Kubwij Buni Eo” was highlighted in each of the conference days from June 22-25, 2010 in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Each day featured the gathering of participants presenting cultural presentations, songs, and entertainment. Of course, the conference also highlighted PIBBA’s song, which includes all the languages of the region, such as the following chorus: “Iokwe, Raan Annim, Kaselehlia, Alii, Aloha, Olomwaay, Hafa Dei, Tuwoh, Mogethin, Talofa.”

Among the entities that attended the conference are Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau, Chuuk, CNMI, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Yap, and Guam. The mission of PIBBA is to bring these entities together to promote cultural and language activities by disseminating information, involving communities, and encouraging quality education programs through the western Pacific.

The first night of the PIBBA Conference featured a cultural opening ceremony that was held at the RMI International Conference Center and special dinner hosted by President Jurelang Zedkeia and First Lady Hannah Jurelang Zedkaia. The familiar “Yokwe” could be heard throughout the walls of the center. The evening included a special cultural dance and appearance by the Paramount Chief, welcoming remarks by Honorable Titus Langrine, special message from His Excellency Irooj Jurelang Zedkeia delivered by Acting President Amenta Matthew, special address by Dr. Sharon Nelson-Barber, remarks by PIBBA President Rosa Salas Palomo, a closing prayer by Rev. Enja Enos, introductions by Immediate Past-President Shelten Neth and emcee Molly Helkena, chanting by Willie Mwekto, and performances by the Marshall Islands High School Choir/Special Education students and Majuro Atoll Local Government Choir.

The second through fourth days of the PIBBA Conference were held at the Marshall Islands High School, which began with breakfast, entertainment, announcements, guest speakers, and acknowledgements. The second day featured guest speaker and RMI 2010 Pioneer of the Year, Alfred Capelle, followed by various cultural and educational/language workshops.

The third day featured guest speaker Dr. Hilda Heine, followed by various cultural and educational/language workshops, and a special awards ceremony for the Indigenous Teacher of the Year and Pioneer of the Year for each of the entities.

The final day of the conference featured guest speaker US Ambassador Martha Campbell, followed by additional cultural and educational/language workshops. The PIBBA International Business Meeting was later conducted, and the new PIBBA officers were elected. The new position of webmaster was also introduced during the business meeting. The newly elected PIBBA Officers include the following:

Treasurer: Shelten G. Neth
International Historian: Dr. Marilyn Salas
Webmaster: Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera

The day ended with a silent auction of cultural arts & crafts and a closing ceremony and dinner hosted at the RMI International Convention Center. It featured meaningful traditional performances and presentation of gifts from all the Pacific entities.

We extend a big “Kommool Tata” to all PIBBA Conference steering committee members, and all the entities that joined us to make the 29th Annual International PIBBA Conference a memorable event that will always be remembered for years to come! The Guam IRA President, Grace Griffin presented Acting Director of the Library, Teresita Kennimer, with Warriors in the Crossfire, a new young adult novel by Nancy Bo Flood. The author recently visited Guam and described her research methods at the General Membership Meeting on Saturday, May 15, at the Guam Reef Hotel.

Guam IRA Receives Honorable Awards in 55th Annual Convention

The Guam Council of the International Reading Association (IRA) received honorable awards during IRA's 55th Annual Convention held in Chicago. The rewards that were awarded include Honor Council and Honor Roll. Please see the awards above. IRA is to be commended on making a difference in the literacy development of our island's children of all ages.

IRA helps educators and parents alike discover the wonder and the worlds to be found in books. Guam IRA is a professional organization for individuals who are genuinely concerned with the development of reading programs for children and adults. Nancy Bo Flood to Speak at IRA Meeting

Nancy Bo Flood

Nancy Bo Flood will be the featured speaker at the May 15 meeting of the Guam Council of the International Reading Association at the Guam Reef Hotel. Ms. Flood is the author of Warriors in the Crossfire, a new young adult novel set on Saipan during WWII. The meeting will begin at 8:00 am with registration and breakfast. Dottie Winterle will have copies of her new book, Silent and Forgotten, The Legend of the Navajo Warrior, available and the book's illustrator, Viktoria Sayre, will be there, too.

The program includes the induction of new officers for the Guam Council, a scene from "Little shop of Horrors" presented by the National Forensic League of Okkodo High School, and a special recognition of our gracious sponsors this year, Continental Airlines, MCV Cable Cares, The Pacific Daily News, and The Bank of Guam.
The meeting will conclude at 11:00 am with door prize raffles, including books, teaching materials and a laptop computer for those who sign up for IRA membership for next year 2010-2011.

The Pacific Educator in Residence (PEIR) Program is now accepting applications for 2010-2011. The PEIR program offers a one-year residency for educators from Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, the Federated States of Micronesia (Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei, and Yap), Hawai'i, the Republic of Palau, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

The program enhances and develops the personal and professional skills of Pacific educators in the context of PREL's ongoing work. It focuses on learning experiences that maximize professional development opportunities and benefit their schools and communities. According to the PREL announcement, PEIRs generally remain employed in their home entities and return at the end of their one-year term.

The following are the four opportunities available from September 2010 through August 2011:

-Grades 4-5 English Language Arts/ELL (based in PREL CNMI Service Center)
-Library and Information Literacy Initiatives (based in the successful candidate's local PREL Service Center)
-Parent Information Resource Center (based in the PREL RMI Service Center)
-Research and Evaluation (based in the PREL Honolulu Office)

In Loving Memory of Margarita Meno "Ta" Yoshida

The IRA family extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Margarita Meno Yoshida, fondly known as “Ta” (familian Anako/Tisu) of Malojloj. Ta, a loving IRA friend and grandmother of IRA President-Elect, Margaret "Yoshi" Asuncion, was called to her eternal rest on April 13, 2010 at the age of 90. She will always be remembered. May she rest in peace.

Rosary is being at 6:30 p.m. weekdays and Sunday, followed by Mass at 7 p.m., with rosary on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. followed by Mass at 6 p.m. at San Isidro Church, Malojloj.

Funeral plans will be announced later.

Guam author and storyteller, Dottie Wintterle, will hold an autograph session for her new book titled Silent and Forgotten on April 10, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the IP Coffee Company in Mangilao.

Wintterle is the author of Grandma's Love and Grandpa's Love. She has been an educator for over forty years, specializing in elementary education. She came to Guam in 1969 as a teacher with a two-year contract and has made Guam her home ever since.

Youth Music Workshop Caught a Song with Eric Ode

Eric Ode and a group of young children who participated in the Youth Music Workshop at the IP Coffee Co. in Mangilao wrote a song together on March 20, 2010.

First they brainstormed to get an idea they wanted to work on. The list included, “No, don’t”, which turned out to be the “hook” they were looking for.

Ode enjoyed his music workshop with the children. “It’s hard to keep yourself out of the process when you’re writing with kids,” Ode said. “I wanted it to be all their ideas. After we had a few lines, I asked, "How would you sing that? And as the kids tried out different melodies we heard just the right one,” he said.

As the group went through the writing process, they chose words and changed words several times before they agreed. The paper was full of rhyming lists, scratched out and rewritten words. But the finished song was one they were all proud of. Ode picked out the chords they were singing, and they put it to the test. The following are the lyrics they developed that just happens to be a great poem too!

Don’t Eat the Pie

Grandma took the pie out of the oven.
She put it on the counter to cool.
Chanelle smelled the pie from next door
And asked for three slices or more.

No, don’t eat the pie!
The pie is for the party.

Mr. Ode will be visiting public and private schools on Guam the following week with his program, "Catch a Song, Stretch a Song. Turn it Inside Out."

These 14 schools participated in the Read-A-Thon 2009 to raise the funds for this visit.
He will also visit the Hagatna Public Library for Story Hour on Saturday, March 20, from 10-11 A.M. For older children he will have a songwriting workshop at the IP Cafe in Mangilao at 2-4 P.M. the same day.

Go Green, Go Write! by entering the Guam Council International Reading Association’s Fourth Annual Writing Contest. This year’s topic is “How do you go green and read?” Prizes will be given to winners, who will be announced in the Guam Council IRA’s April newsletter, in each of the following categories: (K-1st) (2nd- 3rd) (4th -5th) (6th -8th) and (9th -12th). The contest guidelines can be obtained from your school principal or on the Guam Council IRA’s website (http://www.iraguam.blogspot.com). You may contact Grace Griffin at G.W.H.S. (734-2911) or by email (iraguam1@gmail.com). The contest deadline is Friday, February 26, 2010. All entries must be submitted to Grace Griffin at GWHS by 3:00 P.M. on that day. Essays may be faxed at 969-4075.
