I understand that reading is very important in the development of a child's education. Years ago Read-A-Thons require READING by the child before a pledge is given. For the past few decades that I could remember, The kids just walk around in places like the bowling alleys asking for monetary donation. Recently parents are doing the ASKING OF MONEY for read-a-thon for their their children or grandchildren. Is this acceptable practice? Somehow I don't think that a whole lot of reading is happening. What I see happening is an island wide BEGGING/ASKING for money for the sake of winning prizes, both children and teachers. I feel strongly that having children asking for money even from strangers is instilling in the minds that if you need money, just walk around and ask for it, like beggars do.
