Annual Book Donation at IRA Community Book Fair - Dec. 3

On December 3, 2016, the Guam Council of the International Reading Association donated books to three organizations during its Annual Community Book Fair held at the Agana Shopping Center.  The organizations that received the book donation include the Big Brothers, Big Sisters; Island Girl Power; and Pacific Islands Bilingual Bicultural Association.

16th Guam IRA Community Book Fair A Success!

The annual Guam IRA Community Book Fair held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at the Agana Shopping Center was a success filled with a meaningful literacy environment for families and friends. There were exciting performances and appearances, array of paperback and hardcover books, young adult literature, Read-Alouds, software, novelties, Read-A-Thon 2017 items, and performances by Ginen i Hila i Maga'taotao Siha Association, Julia Naputi Rivera, Pacific Islands Bilingual Bicultural Association (PIBBA), Ulloa GATE Honor Choir, and Carbullido GATE Honor Choir.  There were also special appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog, the Cat in the Hat, and countless prizes! Moreover, donations of books were made to Big Brothers, Big Sisters; Island Girl Power; and PIBBA, in an effort to promote literacy.  Thank you for joining us in our celebration of promoting literacy! IRA Co-Sponsors Annual Regional Language Arts Conference

The 29th Annual Regional Language Arts Conference held on November 18 and 19, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Guam was a success! Its theme was “Reading Writing Together: Collaborate to Callibrate.” The keynote speaker was Dr. Kevin Colleary who focused on "Reading Content, Reading Opinion, Reading Narrative: Reading ALL Sorts of Writing Together!" The plenary speaker was Dr. Margaruite Smith who focused on "Common Core Standards." The LAC was co-sponsored by the Guam Council of the International Reading Association. *Please note that there is a conference fee to attend the LAC. IRA members pay a discounted fee. Be sure to mention that you are an IRA member in order to receive the discounted rate.

Truman Elementary, was presented a $500 check for her grant proposal entitled “Creating an Independent Reading Program-Growing Readers” from grant chairperson, Lois T. Gumataotao on Saturday, October 29, 2016.  Congratulations Sharon and best wishes on your project with your students and have fun!
