Guam ILA Awards Anicas and Perez a Fall 2021 IRA Grant!

$500 Grants were awarded to Liwayway Anicas and Maridel Perez, for the 2021 Fall Grant

Cycle, with funding from the Guam Council, International Literacy Association, and the UOG

School of Education Alumni Association, with the purpose of promoting literacy.


Liwayway Anicas, 3rd grade teacher from J.Q San Miguel Elementary – “Gotta Give Me Some

Love” – This $500 grant’s purpose is to help instill in children the importance of positive

attitude and inspire self-worth and confidence through books, and at the same time anticipate

the improvement of reading fluency and comprehension. Some of the titles of the books

include, but not limited to, Be You!, Be Who You Are, It’s Okay to Make Mistakes, Building

Self-Esteem pack, etc.


Maridel Perez, GATE Teacher (2nd thru 5th grade) from Maria Ulloa Elementary School –

“WhoosReading in GATE!”. This $500 grant will help to provide remediation and enrichment in

reading comprehension by reading a variety of titles that appeal to the students, and take

comprehensive quizzes using the WhoosReading on-line program (www.whoosreading.org).

Students will read at least one book per week in a six-month time frame in the school year (or

at least 20 school weeks). Some of the titles of the books are on-line. Other titles include You

Are Enough, A Book About Inclusion, Who/Where Is…Collection,
